Tips on Flying Safely with your Dog...

Does your dog hurl in the car?  Yes?  Ok.  Stop.  Hit the Back button.  Putting him in an airplane would only be the first step of a process that most likely would end with an NTSB investigation.

If, like most dogs, he enjoys the car, he probably will love the plane.  Sometimes looking for the cheapest flights for you and your furry baby is not the best idea. You want him to be comfortable along with you in the cabin.  However, until you know how your dog will behave in the plane, fly with another passenger or pilot in the front with you.  Let the dog enjoy the trip from the back seat.  The yoke could look interesting enough that he would want to 'help' on short final.  Rudder pedals could be intriguing too.

There is a myriad of restraints sold that work with standard seatbelt configurations.  Not only would this restrict his movements, but it also would provide a big safety factor in heavy turbulence.

Here is a great tip to help your dog deal with pressure changes.  Have a few irresistable snacks at the ready (for the dog, of course).  Chewing and swallowing will help his little ears adjust to the change in pressure.

Window.  What dog doesn't want to stick his head out the window?  Even slowed to 80 knots though, that's roughly 90 mph.  He only thinks he wants his head out the window.  He'll get used to the disappointment of a closed window, and you can just plan to de-snot the windows after you land.

Oxygen.  If you need it, so does he. So unless you have a pressurized cabin, keep to lower altitudes.

By land or air, always travel with food and water for your friend.  And don't forget the bowl and hearing protection, After all thats what this site is all about!

Lastly, never forget who is pilot in command.  Keep your attention where it belongs.

Fly Safe!  Woof!
